What is a root canal?

Teeth have roots. These roots are filled with a kind of tissue that is called pulp. When teeth become infected, it is this inner pulp or tissue that becomes infected, and this is when a root canal becomes necessary.

Your dentist can go down into the root canals and clear them out of the infected tissue. The canals are then filled with a barium-treated material so that an x-ray confirmation of the surgery can be taken. Finally, the tooth is capped with a crown.

When do people get a root canal?
